High-precision lateral surface inspection

NELA has added an extraordinarily interesting feature to its VisionCheck image processing software for parts that require an extremely precise surface inspection of the lateral areas. This new function is based on the pictures taken by the cameras inside the lateral surface sensor. Each of these six to twelve cameras, which are arranged in a circle in the upper area of the sensor, covers a specific area of the lateral surface. The pictures overlap slightly and therefore enable the system to perform a 360° inspection of the inner and/or outer lateral surface of your parts. Without the new feature, each picture has to be evaluated individually. With the new feature, the individual images are put together to an overall image of the lateral surface. This creates completely new opportunites for surface inspection because it is now possible to define inspection zones that are always referenced to the same reference point. Parts with slots, bore holes, notches, incisions or other characteristics are now inspected under repeatable conditions which guarantees a reliable surface inspection with highest precision and an extremely low level of pseudo waste.

The new function is applied on parts whose lateral surfaces fulfill a specific function, such as sealing, for example, or who possess certain characteristics such as slots, holes, dents or grooves that shall not be recognized as defects. This includes, for example, rubber stoppers with slots for medical applications, metal parts with slots and dents, or burnished sleeves for industrial applications whose lateral areas must be thoroughly inspected for defects. Lateral surface inspection is also suited to check whether certain characteristics (slots, dents etc) are present on your parts.

An additional benefit of lateral surface inspection is that parts do not have to be re-oriented before they enter the inspection system, making the entire inspection process faster.
